The Center for Children’s Advocacy (CCA), the largest children’s rights organization in New England, seeks a dynamic attorney for its Immigrant Children’s Justice Project (ICJP). CCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to enforcing the legal rights of low-income children. More information about the Center can be found on CCA’s website: www.cca-ct.org .

The ICJP is the primary source of life-saving legal services for immigrant children and youth in Connecticut. The Project provides legal representation, training and system reform advocacy to help immigrant children and youth gain immigration status and access systems that provide them with critical health, education and support services. This opening is for a full time attorney who will have the opportunity to advocate for immigrant children and youth through a wide variety of strategies. The attorney will:

Provide legal consultation and representation to immigrant children and youth regarding Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, other immigration options, access to education as English Language Learners (ELLs) and special education students.
Provide legal rights training to immigrant youth, families, advocates and community providers.
Collaborate with CCA’s Communications Director to produce legal information materials for youth and community providers.

Collaborate with other CCA attorneys, outside immigrant advocacy organizations and community providers to identify systemic problems that impact immigrant youth and engage in system reform advocacy, including litigation, administrative advocacy and legislative advocacy as necessary, to address the identified problems.

Cultural competence, experience with children and youth of color and a demonstrated deep commitment to social justice and racial justice is required.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
Strong organizational skills

This year is also the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is a landmark civil rights legislation designed to increase access and opportunity for people with disabilities across the nation, including in employment.

PRIDE Month: The CHBA recognizes our community's connection to this month's observance and celebration by highlighting the accomplishments of Justice Monica Marquez, who became the first openly gay Latina to serve on the Colorado Supreme Court in 2010. Justice Marquez remains the longest serving openly gay person currently serving as a state supreme court justice. She is a graduate of Yale Law School and is a past president of the Colorado LGBT Bar Association and a past board member of the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association.

Member Spotlight: Earlier this month, our former president and current board member, Margaret Castinado, won the election for the post of Connecticut Bar Association Vice President. The election was the first time in nearly 30 years that candidates competed for the vice presidency of the state's largest bar association. We congratulate Attorney Castinado on her historic victory!

Honoring Juneteenth

This Saturday, June 19, 2021, the CHBA calls on our community to honor the historical significance of Juneteenth and continue to stand in solidarity with the Black community.

What is Juneteenth?

The word itself is a combination of June and nineteenth, and refers to the end days of chattel slavery in the United States when, on June 19, 1865, enslaved Black people were informed of their freedom in Galveston, Texas following the end of the Civil War. Juneteenth took place more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, which went into effect on January 1, 1863 and declared that all slaves in the Confederate states were to be freed. However, enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas did not occur until the advancement of Union troops and the surrender of Confederacy forces in 1865.

Although Juneteenth generally celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, slavery was still legal until December of 1865, when ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution officially abolished slavery.

In 1980, Texas became the first state to designate Juneteenth as a holiday. Since then, 46 other states and Washington, D.C., have moved to officially recognize the day, which is also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day.

On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed a bill establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. “This is a day of profound weight and profound power, a day in which we remember the moral stain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country and continues to take,” President Biden said.

The Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association Elects New Officers and Board Members

The following individuals were elected to office at the CHBA’s annual meeting held virtually on April 17, 2021:

“It is an incredible honor to be the President of this phenomenal organization,” said Mr. Chase. “It is also an incredible responsibility that I aim to give my all to. Currently the world is seeing the pain and sorrow that racism, xenophobia, misogyny and other forms of discrimination bring. I aim to continue the efforts that our organization has had with the other affinity bar organizations of this state and the National Hispanic Bar Organization to not only promote diversity and inclusion but also to educate our peers and our communities on the importance of the two.” When asked what was one of the main focuses of his administration he replied, “I want to make it a priority of my term to inspire, encourage and promote the legal profession to the youth of our state beyond just those in college and law school. Often it is said that ‘you cannot become what you cannot see’ and we need to show younger students that they can be attorneys who excel in this practice.”

The CHBA is also pleased to announce that the following individuals were reelected to the Board of Directors for the 2021-2022 term: Maggie Castinado, Alfredo Fernández, Hon. Matthew Dallas Gordon, and Jessica Torres.

How to Assist on Election Day

The CBA and the Secretary of State's office have a joint program called the "Secretary's Legal Assistance Program." The program trains volunteer attorneys to assist the Secretary of the State and be on call to respond to polling issues on Election Day, Tuesday, August 11.
